Ben, 17, was unable to remain with his parents due to ongoing behavioral challenges, particularly concerning his interactions with younger siblings. Following a referral from his social worker, he was assessed for supported housing. It was recommended that Ben stay within the South Shields area to minimize exposure to negative influences associated with his peer group in Hebburn, which could further impact his behavior.
He was initially placed in a lower-support accommodation with a risk management plan in place during periods of reduced staffing. However, while residing at Strickland House, Ben engaged in destructive behavior, damaging another resident’s door and taking personal belongings. Given that the two individuals had prior familiarity, this incident exacerbated existing tensions between them. To mitigate further conflict, Ben was relocated to Flavia House, ensuring separation and reducing the likelihood of further disputes.
Despite this intervention, Ben’s behavioral issues continued to escalate, leading to involvement in shoplifting and altercations with other young people outside the community. Over time, he became entangled in drug-related activities, culminating in the theft of a substantial quantity of drugs from a known dealer. This incident significantly increased risks to both Ben and those around him, including his family and fellow residents at Flavia House. The situation severely impacted his mental well-being, and he became increasingly withdrawn, ultimately attempting suicide.
Given that Flavia House did not provide 24/7 staffing, the safety of Ben and the other residents became a critical concern. While alternative placement at Askins Lodge was considered, Ben declined the option due to strained relationships with some individuals residing there. In response, Key facilitated mediation between Ben and his family, working towards a suitable long-term arrangement. Ultimately, a safe and supportive placement was secured with trusted family friends, offering Ben the stability and care he required.
