Pedalling Towards Independence

This story shows how creativity, collaboration, and community support can empower young people to build independence, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

3 young people on bikes

David (16), Alan (17), and Michael (17) were keen to find ways to settle into their new community. All three young men shared an interest in cycling — not only to stay active, but also as a practical means of transport and a way to explore their surroundings.

During a team meeting, staff identified an exciting opportunity through TO Bike, a new community resource in South Shields that encourage young people to get into cycling.

The initiative offers bike repairs and servicing, sells professionally refurbished bicycles at low cost, and provides a space for the public to donate unwanted bikes and equipment. It also runs twice-weekly drop-in sessions where young people can learn essential bike maintenance and repair skills—making it a perfect fit for the trio.

After reaching out and receiving a warm welcome from the team, we were delighted to learn that three bicycles were ready and perfectly suited for the young men. Final safety checks confirmed the bikes were roadworthy, giving David, Alan, and Michael everything they needed to ride with confidence.

That very evening, they set off on their first ride around the local area. They returned absolutely buzzing, full of stories about the new places they had discovered. From college journeys to trips to the park, their bikes had opened a new world of freedom and independence.

This story is a shining example of what happens when community partnerships come together. The impact went beyond transport. This initiative helped the young men feel connected to their community, build confidence, and develop practical life skills. With ongoing maintenance sessions at the shop, they have continued opportunities to learn, grow, and form new local relationships.

A big thank you to the team at TO Bike for their support in making this possible!
