At 16, Ruth* faced homelessness due to family difficulties, prompting the local authority to place her in foster care. However, following multiple missing episodes, children’s services determined that supported accommodation would better suit her needs, providing the opportunity to develop essential skills for independence while allowing her the freedom she sought. Consequently, she was referred to Key for housing support.
Initially, Ruth demonstrated readiness for the transition, possessing the necessary skills to progress toward independent living. However, within weeks of moving into supported accommodation, her tenancy became at risk due to ongoing behavioral challenges, including difficulties adhering to rules, conflicts with other residents, and disregard for official warnings.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, Key addressed these concerns with Ruth, emphasizing the need for immediate change. As substance misuse was a contributing factor, she was given the option to engage with the local addiction support service, Matrix, or risk eviction.
A structured support plan was collaboratively developed between Ruth and her social worker, setting measurable goals over six months. This included a formal referral to Matrix, a behavioral agreement, and additional development targets tailored to her needs. Ruth also expressed a preference for transitioning to a Key outreach property.
One year post-referral, Ruth successfully met all established goals and enrolled in a course at Newcastle College. She was thrilled when a suitable outreach property became available, allowing her to take the next step toward independent living. While initial concerns arose regarding guests at the property, Key’s Resettlement and Retainment team swiftly addressed these issues, ensuring a smooth transition
Eight months later, Ruth continues to engage positively with her education, maintain her home, and manage her finances effectively. As she approaches her 18th birthday, she is preparing for a more permanent housing arrangement with short-term support from the Resettlement and Retainment Team, marking a significant step toward long-term stability and independence.
