The dedicated volunteers behind Key to Life Foodbank have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to local people after the organisation was named winner of the Heart of the Community Award at the #Love South Tyneside Awards 2026.
The award was presented at a special ceremony held at The Customs House on Thursday 4 June, celebrating the borough’s everyday heroes and the difference they make to communities across South Tyneside. Sponsored by Newcastle Building Society, the Heart of the Community Award recognises those who demonstrate a long-standing commitment to supporting their community.
While Key to Life Foodbank is proud to receive the award, the organisation says the recognition belongs to its incredible volunteers, whose dedication and compassion make a lasting difference to local people every day.
Around 40 volunteers support the foodbank, collectively contributing approximately 50 volunteering sessions each month. Their efforts help sort donations, prepare food parcels, welcome visitors and ensure the foodbank continues to run smoothly. Through their commitment, hundreds of local residents facing hardship receive practical support, compassion and a warm welcome each year.
Judges praised Key to Life Foodbank for making a “lasting and meaningful impact across South Tyneside”, recognising the vital role volunteers play in supporting residents and bringing communities together.
The award is particularly meaningful because nominations for the #Love South Tyneside Awards come directly from local residents, highlighting the impact Key to Life Foodbank has within the community and the value people place on the support it provides.
The annual awards celebrate individuals, groups and organisations that go above and beyond to support others, strengthen communities and inspire local pride. Since launching in 2019, the awards have showcased the talent, generosity and community spirit found across South Tyneside, from young volunteers and community groups to businesses and inspirational individuals.
Speaking after the ceremony, the Deputy Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Alan Rice, praised all those recognised during the evening:
“These awards are a powerful reminder of the incredible people who make South Tyneside such a special place to live and work. Across our borough, individuals and organisations are giving their time, supporting others and bringing communities together. It’s only right that we recognise and celebrate the difference they make.”
The recognition reflects the strong community spirit that sits at the heart of Key to Life Foodbank and the collective efforts of volunteers, supporters, donors and partners who help the organisation continue its work.
A spokesperson for Key to Life Foodbank said: “Being recognised by the people we serve makes this achievement especially significant. We would like to thank everyone who nominated us, as well as our volunteers, supporters, donors and partners. This award belongs to everyone who helps make Key to Life Foodbank a place of hope, dignity and support for local people.”
The award highlights the essential role Key to Life Foodbank’s volunteers continue to play in supporting residents through difficult times and strengthening communities across South Tyneside. Their commitment, kindness and generosity have been recognised not only by the judges, but by the local people whose lives they help improve every day.
